Lex's Writer of the Week - Roberto Bolano

Roberto Bolaño Ávalos, born 28 April 1953, was a Chilean novelist. His most well-known work was “2666”. After Augusto Pinochet's coup, Bolaño was arrested but was rescued by two former classmates who had become prison guards. He moved to Spain in 1977 where he married and settled near Barcelona working as a dishwasher, campground custodian, bellhop, and garbage collector. He died on 15 July 2003 from liver failure.

"What twisted people we are. How simple we seem, or at least pretend to be in front of others, and how twisted we are deep down. How paltry we are and how spectacularly we contort ourselves before our own eyes, and the eyes of others...And all for what? To hide what? To make people believe what?"
- Roberto Bolaño
