Mangia! Italian food in 18th century - Showcase Gallery, Rocca Sorrentina - Second life

Exhibit: Mangia!  Italian food in 18th century paintings & prints
When:  October 1 - November 27, 2016
Where:  Showcase Gallery, Rocca SorrentinaThe world of food ad drink has long been the subject of painting in Italy - extending back to early Roman times.  Along with traditional religious and mythological paintings, a great number of genre paintings and still-lifes (or bodegones as they were called in Spanish-occupied Naples) were painted.  They celebrated everyday life -- harvesting, food preparation, cooking, and consumption.  The foods brought to Europe from newly-discovered continents were often featured as exotic additions to the paintings, but the familiar Mediterranean fare of fresh local fruit and vegetables, olive oil and pant-based protein were the staples of these Italian images as well as their cuisine.  This exhibit, curated by Aphrodite Macbain, celebrates Italian cuisine in art.
